League of Mercy Award
Recognising Doreen Barton
St John Ambulance Volunteer, Doreen Barton, has been recognised by the League of Mercy for her 40-year commitment to young people in Essex.
The award celebrates voluntary service assisting in relieving sickness and health. This is the first time a St John Ambulance volunteer has been awarded the medal since the League of Mercy was established over 100 years ago. Doreen attended the awards presentation with her Granddaughter, Charlotte and County Commissioner (Youth) for Essex St John Ambulance – Valerie Morris. She received her award in early September, from The Rt Hon the Lord Lingfield Kt DL; also present was the Lady Mayoress of London, The High Sheriff and HRH Princess Katrina of Yugoslavia.
Doreen, who is an Officer in the order of St John, has become so popular with the young people in Essex that she has been affectionally named “Aunty Dor” by the cadets that have passed through her care over her time supporting them.
Following this momentous occasion, the League of Mercy has decided to accept Cadet nominations for this award, honouring acts of bravery from both military and non-military cadet branches.
